Mutual presentation on the net

Date: November 19th (Tue) 17: 30-20: 00 (Japan time)
Place: Musashino Art University 10th Building 305 Classroom

We held a session in which this school and Shanghai Institute of Visual Art were connected via the Internet, and the works of each class were presented. It was an exciting event by presenting each other in real-time on-screen and exchanging opinions. The presentations of Shanghai Institute of Visual Art were interesting topics focusing on modern social issues.

Shanghai Institute of Visual Art:
Instructor: Prof. Chen Rong
Presentation works:

"Manifesto for the new standard e-bike"

"Manifesto for the new standard e-bike"
Songjiang university town is one of the biggest university student zones in Shanghai, high proportion of the students use electric bicycle for daily traveling, mean while reflected by police office, nearly none of them strictly obey the traffic rules, which highly increased the accident rate in this area, affected not only students themselves, but also other disrelated people. Researches done by our group shows that, students' attitude toward the traffic rules and traffic police is the key factor (and also the only factor we can solve by communication design) of the accident rate. So we create a special figure to carries the attitide that "we are cool that we follow the rules". Which in another word, we design a youth-attracting brand for the traffic rules.

"SECURITY ISSUE OF THE SANITATION WORKERS"

"SECURITY ISSUE OF THE SANITATION WORKERS"
Sanitation workers are the guardians of the city, but there are great safety risks when they clean the roads. According to the field investigation, it is found that there are three main reasons for the injuries of sanitation workers in road cleaning. First, the parking position of the tool car is not in place when cleaning the road, which causes the driver or the electric car to not notice and crash. Second, the government supervision is not strong, there is no detailed regulation of road safety standards for sanitation workers. The third driver's driving safety awareness is not enough, did not pay attention to the road cleaning workers. We started from these points and wanted to make some changes for sanitation workers so that they could be protected. Therefore, we conducted research at four levels: individual operation , company , regulatory and social level. Finally, we present our plan in these four directions.

Musashino Art University, Department of Visual Communication Design:

Presentation works:

Group A: "To fulfill 'I want to work more at school!'"

In September, we 'A-Group' were given a project to improve the discomfort someone feels in Musashino Art University.
In our group, everyone felt inconvenient when we do some design practice in university. So we chose a subject: 'Work Space for Department of Visual Communication Design'.
Students of Visual Communication Design have difficulty working in campus. Even though they have to do a lot of projects, there is few spaces for work in campus. They are allowed to use classrooms for their work, but sometimes they can't use classrooms because of class, exhibitions or somethings.
So we made up our mind to make an application which notifies classrooms not being used. Finally, we couldn't make an application because we aren't learned a skill for making applications, but we made a suggestion of application: Akibeya-kun.
You can see a video of the presentation of this project on the page of Second semester.

Group B: "Remodeling plan of the office of Visual Communication Design department"

What we investigated to improve the system was "the staff room of the Visual Communication Design Department" (commonly called Shide-Ken). It is a room where professors, assistants, and administrative assistants are staying, and students come here to submit works. Shide-Ken is an important place where students frequently use it, but when we use it, we feel that we do not want to use it very much. When students don't want to go, it means there are some problems to improve.
Therefore, we conducted a survey to find a system that should be improved in the Shide-Ken. There are two main survey methods: interviews with users and questionnaires to students. First of all, as a result of the interview, the most troublesome thing about Shide-Ken was that the assistant side mainly had trouble in “lending equipment” and complaints about the system. On the student side, the main concern was "psychological dissatisfaction with responses of assistants and administrative assistants". Next, a questionnaire given to students showed that about half of the students visited to use the lending system and that most of the students had a good image of Shide-Ken. On the other hand, however, it revealed that some students felt intimidating, such as "scary."
Based on the above results, we surveyed the dissatisfaction points of both the system aspect and the user's psychological aspect of Shide-Ken. On the student side, systematically, "there are unclear areas of use", "inconvenient when crowded", and psychological dissatisfaction include "fear, hesitant, and difficulty in speaking" . On the assistant side, the dissatisfaction with the system was “difficulty organizing information on paper media” and “many other tasks”. Psychological dissatisfaction points included "there is a tendency to be too busy and sloppy responsive," and "irritated by lack of communication on the student side." Based on these considerations, we created a customer journey map and came to the conclusion that there are some points to be improved in the lending system that often involves students and administrative assistants. The challenge we have derived in this way is the "simplification of the lending system." In order to simplify the lending system, we devised a method to increase the efficiency of the procedure by digitizing the current lending work on paper.
So, we started with creating the first prototype. The first prototype was supposed to be an iPad that was installed at the counter of the place where the procedure was already performed, and equipped with a system that allows the student to perform a series of procedures for searching and lending equipment. With the conventional lending method, it is necessary to bring the things you want to borrow to the counter, write information such as grade and name on paper and obtain the approval of the administrative assistants, but Using this prototype QR code reading and student ID, the procedure can be completed only by the student. We actually verified it using this prototype. As a result of having the administrative assistants and the student operate the prototype, we received positive opinions on the digitization of the procedure. However, the student had no major stumbling blocks in operation but there were some problems with the system for searching for what to borrow.
In addition, in the opinion of the administrative assistants, “Even if there were the iPad on the counter, we will respond as usual, so it is not useful so much.” In addition, while the prototype was aimed at solving problems for both students and assistants, we realized that there was no system to provide the assistants with the information of the students. You can see a video of the presentation of this project on the page of Second semester.
